Before taking your plans of retiring to Spain seriously, it is recommended to call on the DWP to check that they are prepared to transfer your pension and any benefits overseas. Sadly we have heard reports that people are not treated in a uniform manner and therefore we recommend that you are fully prepared when you talk to them, and that you argue your case vigorously. Contact details
You will need to contact the
DWP to get a E121 form (click
Healthcare and link to 'Applying
& Receiving State Healthcare - Pensioners')
You have every right to your pension paid overseas and once one
of you is registered with the Spanish Social Security (I.N.S.S.), then
other family members may also benefit from free healthcare as well under
the same application.
Remember: Retirement age in
Spain for both Men and Women is 65.
Therefore you may of course transfer your pension and benefits over to
Spain, but if you are relying on an older wife to hit pensionable age
first (i.e. 60yrs in the UK), then you will have to reconsider as she
will not be entitled to free prescriptions and unfinanced healthcare
until she is 65. Until that time you may wish to go down either the
E106, EHIC or private healthcare route. (see section on
Healthcare)
This is the area of greatest confusion and dispute with the DWP and it is this area which we recommend that you are most prepared for. In general, if you are retiring to Spain then these are the benefits you normally CAN take with you:
Benefits that you normally CANNOT take with you:
Ironically the Winter Fuel Allowance DOES get paid to most of the 60.000 British pensioners that have taken up Spanish retirement. Well it can get pretty chilly inland anyway!! Healthcare Costs Often Not Covered
